Lemosho Route 7 Days

A scenic western approach, guided at a personal pace by Edward’s local team.

The route

A complete look at your climb.

The 7-day Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the quieter west, moving from rainforest across the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit at Lava Tower and Barranco. With small groups, a trusted local mountain crew and daily health checks, Edward can adjust the walking rhythm and rest stops to the people in front of him. The route combines varied scenery with useful ‘climb high, sleep low’ stages, while keeping safety and honest communication about altitude at the centre of the climb.

Edward’s adviceEdward recommends seven days for fit trekkers who want a varied route and can manage the longer Barranco-to-Barafu stage. Choose eight days for a separate Karanga overnight and more time to acclimatise.

Day01
Londorossi Gate · Mti Mkubwa Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp

Edward and the mountain team meet you at your hotel for a final briefing before the drive to Londorossi Gate (2,250 m). After park registration, the trail enters Kilimanjaro’s western rainforest, where wet and muddy conditions can make rainwear essential. The crew goes ahead to prepare camp and a warm meal, while Edward uses the first kilometres to find a comfortable group rhythm. If the weather and everyone’s condition allow, a short acclimatisation walk follows before the daily health check and briefing.

Day02
Mti Mkubwa Camp · Shira 1 Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp

After an early breakfast, the trail climbs out of the forest and into heath and moorland. As the landscape opens, the Shira Plateau and Kibo appear for the first time. Edward keeps the pace deliberately steady so the group gains height without using unnecessary energy, with regular pauses for water and a check on how everyone is responding. At Shira 1, the crew serves a warm meal and the evening is kept calm for recovery at the new altitude.

Day03
Shira 1 Camp · Shira 2 Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp

Today crosses the wide Shira Plateau towards Shira 2, with open views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes and, in clear weather, Mount Meru behind you. The terrain is less steep than the previous day, giving the body useful time at altitude. When conditions and the group’s energy are suitable, Edward may add a short acclimatisation walk before returning to camp. The day ends with a warm meal, a health check and a clear explanation of the climb-high, sleep-low stage ahead.

Day04
Shira 2 Camp · Lava Tower · Barranco Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Shira 2 Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

The route climbs through increasingly alpine terrain to Lava Tower at about 4,600 m. Spending time and eating lunch at this height gives the body an important acclimatisation stimulus before the descent to Barranco Camp. The repeated rises and drops can make this a demanding day, so Edward adjusts pauses to the group and asks climbers to report headache, nausea or unusual fatigue immediately. Barranco lies lower beneath the famous wall, allowing recovery in denser air before the next stage.

Walking time6–8 hoursOvernightBarranco Camp · 3,960 m
Day05
Barranco Camp · Karanga · Barafu Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Barranco Camp → Karanga → Barafu Camp

An early start helps the group reach the Barranco Wall before the busiest period. The ascent is not technical, but it does require balance, patience and occasional use of the hands; Edward and the guides stay close on the narrower passages. After crossing the Karanga Valley, the 7-day itinerary continues to Barafu, making this longer than the equivalent stage on the 8-day route. At high camp, the crew has the tents ready while Edward checks summit clothing, water and headlamps before an early meal and rest.

Walking time7–9 hoursOvernightBarafu Camp · 4,640 m
Day06
Barafu Camp · Uhuru Peak · Mweka Camp on the Kilimanjaro route

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

The summit attempt begins around midnight from Barafu Camp. Edward and the guides set a slow, consistent rhythm towards Stella Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), checking physical and mental wellbeing throughout the climb rather than pushing to a fixed speed. After time at the summit, the group descends carefully to Barafu for food and a short recovery, then continues to Mweka Camp. This is the longest day of the route, and extra attention is given to footing on the descent when tired legs make slips more likely.

Walking time12–15 hoursOvernightMweka Camp · 3,100 m
Day07
Mweka Camp · Mweka Gate on the Kilimanjaro route

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final trail descends through warmer, greener forest to Mweka Gate. Edward keeps the pace comfortable for tired knees and legs, and the team completes the park formalities before celebrating the end of the climb together. Successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro certificate, followed by a personal farewell with the crew and transport back to the hotel. It is a relaxed final stage after an intense summit day.
